Head in the Sky

The long, slim bodies disguised in a night starry with rare and pale lights, glide from the pot-holed street.

Here, on the coast, the heat is gentle ; over there the heat dries out bodies and detaches them from the earth to push them towards the sky. As if to seek pure, unsoiled water. And yet, the sand-carrying winds, ever more frequent, turn the sky into a cloud of fine earth. Up there, elsewhere. And yet, here – on earth – he is, without naïvety, more open co the world over the seas he knows th an to the Africa he speaks of without ever really having set foot there. The ships are in the town, the planes are ovec the town : cool, nice, fine, boy ; the idea of leaving is there, present in everyone’s mind, carried along by the soft sea winds.

A traveller in this landscape may think of Dakar nostalgically, entwining its history with that of Saint-Louis, Thiès, Ziguinchor… But Dakar is essentially a modern city, stimulating ambitions, desires and talents. And insanity. Dakar pretends it needs no-one when, in fact, it couldn’t exise without the amorous or corrupt presence of the passers-by of this world. Dakar is one of those capitals where you can stop and have sorne space, take sorne time.

A fiction, perhaps a reality that the words of great statesmen encourage, watched complacently by new donors. The Massina empires – too far away and too recent – hide themselves under the flamboyant and unique vestiges of a pharaonism, probable or improbable, certainly unable to assert its own splendour or its own talent.
